Abstract: Based on the study report dated 23 June 2021: Effect of Broth & Co’s Beef Bone Broth on Lower Gastrointestinal Disturbances

Broth & Co Beef Bone Broth Powder was evaluated in a 12-week interventional, single-arm pre-post study in Australian adults

with moderate lower gastrointestinal disturbances. Following a 3–4 week run-in control phase, participants consumed 5 g of

freeze-dried beef bone broth powder twice daily for 8 weeks.

The study assessed gastrointestinal symptoms, stool form and frequency, symptom-related quality of life, pain, reported food

triggers and intestinal permeability. After 8 weeks, statistically significant improvements were reported across several lower

gastrointestinal measures, including constipation-related symptoms, loose stool, urgency, abdominal pain and troublesome

flatulence. The overall Birmingham IBS symptom score improved significantly (p<0.0001).

Upper gastrointestinal outcomes also improved, including significant changes in indigestion, heartburn, regurgitation and the

total Leeds questionnaire score. Stool patterns shifted towards the ideal Bristol Type 4 profile. The total IBS quality-of-life score

improved significantly (p<0.001).

Among participants with elevated intestinal permeability markers at baseline, lactulose recovery improved by 33% (p=0.023)

and mannitol recovery improved by 33% (p=0.006). A 38% change in the elevated lactulose/mannitol ratio subgroup was

observed, but this subgroup was small (n=6) and the change was not statistically significant.

Because this was a small, uncontrolled single-arm study, the findings should be considered preliminary and do not establish

causation. Larger randomised controlled trials are warranted.
