Our Story: The Journey Behind Broth & Co

How a shared belief in traditional food, practical nutrition and Australian-made quality became Broth & Co.

Broth & Co began with a pot of bone broth, a very long cooking time and a simple question: why should nourishing food be so difficult to fit into everyday life?

We already understood the appeal of broth. It was warming, versatile and deeply familiar—the kind of food that appears in family kitchens across cultures. What we could not always accommodate was the reality of making it properly. A traditional batch can simmer for 24 hours or longer, while work, children and the rest of life continue around it.

We wanted to preserve what made broth worth making while removing the part that made it hard to use regularly. That idea became Broth & Co: real food, thoughtfully prepared and made practical for modern life.

Our Purpose

To make nourishing, real food easier to enjoy—without losing the flavour, care and traditional wisdom that make it meaningful.

How It All Started

Broth & Co was founded by husband-and-wife team Peter Stefanou and Nellie Procopiou. Our backgrounds in healthcare, fitness and wellness gave us a shared interest in nutrition, but the business did not begin as an abstract health concept. It began in our own kitchen.

We made bone broth at home and loved the ritual as much as the result: bones, water and carefully chosen ingredients gradually becoming a rich, savoury foundation for drinks and meals. Yet we also experienced the familiar drawbacks—large pots, long simmering times, limited fridge space and the pressure to use a batch before it spoiled.

Convenience was already everywhere, but the convenient options did not always reflect the kind of food we wanted for our own family. We believed there was room for something different: broth made with care, offered in formats that people could keep on hand and use in exactly the amount they needed.

The challenge was not to modernise broth until it became unrecognisable. It was to make an old food easier to live with.

The Idea That Still Guides Us

Convenience should make real food easier to prepare. It should not require people to compromise on the qualities that drew them to that food in the first place.

Traditional Food, Modern Life

Bone broth may feel like a contemporary wellness product, but the practice of cooking bones, connective tissues, vegetables, herbs and spices in water belongs to kitchens around the world. Chicken soup, pho, seolleongtang, puchero and Mediterranean broths differ in flavour and tradition, yet each reflects the same resourceful idea: use time and simple ingredients to build nourishment and flavour.

For us, that history matters. It keeps broth grounded as food—not a passing trend and not a miracle solution. A cup can be warming and satisfying. A spoonful can deepen a sauce. A prepared broth can become the beginning of soup, risotto, grains, braises or a family meal.

This connection between food, culture and everyday life is explored further in Food Is More Than Nutrition | Health, Communities & the Planet and Traditional Foods in Modern Australia.

Our Food-First Philosophy

We do not believe good nutrition needs to be built around extremes. The most useful foods are often the ones that help ordinary meals happen more easily and more often.

That is why our decisions continue to come back to a few practical principles:

·       Begin with real ingredients and a clear purpose.

·       Use processing thoughtfully, where it improves safety, stability or convenience.

·       Avoid unnecessary fillers and complication.

·       Make products versatile enough for real kitchens and real routines.

·       Explain nutrition carefully, without asking one food to do everything.

·       Create products we are comfortable using ourselves and sharing with our family.

Food-first does not mean rejecting science or innovation. It means using them in service of better food and clearer choices. Traditional knowledge can tell us why a food has endured; modern food science can help us make it safer, more consistent and easier to use.

Made in Australia, Carefully Crafted

Broth & Co products are made in Australia using carefully selected ingredients. Our range has grown to include grass-fed beef and free-range chicken bone broths, bone broth concentrates, freeze-dried powders and targeted collagen-peptide products.

Each format has a reason for existing. Concentrates bring savoury depth to cooking. Powders can be stored in the pantry, rehydrated by the cup and measured directly into a recipe. Collagen-peptide products offer a different kind of convenience: a measured ingredient designed for particular nutritional uses.

Freeze-drying has been especially important to our story. By removing water after the broth has been prepared, it creates a light, shelf-stable format without requiring customers to transport and store cartons of water. People can make one cup, enrich a sauce or add only what a recipe needs—then close the tin for another day.

Why Bone Broth Remains at the Heart of Broth & Co

Bone broth still expresses our original idea better than anything else. It is both simple and remarkably useful. Prepared as a drink, it offers warmth and savoury hydration. Used in cooking, it brings flavour and naturally occurring protein to meals that can also include vegetables, grains, legumes, eggs, fish or meat.

It does not need exaggerated promises to earn a place in the kitchen. Its value is also practical: one product can become a cup of broth, the base of a soup, a cooking liquid for rice or the background flavour in a meal the whole family shares.

Growing Beyond Bone Broth

As our customers’ needs evolved, Broth & Co evolved too. We heard from people looking for convenient support for active lives, recovery, skin, healthy ageing and metabolic wellness. That encouraged us to explore targeted collagen peptides and complementary ingredients while keeping the same commitment to clarity and practical use.

Our BC Beauty range grew from this next chapter. Healthy Glow and Skinny Glow are not simply bone broth in a sweet format. They use specific collagen-peptide profiles developed for different purposes, supported by the evidence relevant to those particular ingredients.

Healthy Glow focuses on beauty-from-within, connective tissue and everyday recovery, while Skinny Glow uses targeted collagen peptides within a metabolic-wellness formulation. Each belongs within a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle rather than standing apart from them.

This is what innovation means to us: not adding novelty for its own sake, but finding credible ways to help people use nutrition more consistently.

The People and Stories Behind the Products

One of the most rewarding parts of building Broth & Co has been meeting the people who bring our products into their lives. They include athletes and coaches, health professionals, parents, busy professionals and home cooks who simply want nourishing food to feel more manageable.

Again and again, customers tell us that broth carries a memory. It may remind them of chicken soup made by a grandparent, pho shared at a crowded table, puchero simmering on a weekend or a bowl of seolleongtang served when someone needed looking after.

Those stories have shaped how we think about the brand. Food does more than deliver nutrients. It can carry culture, care and belonging. A useful product should respect that emotional life rather than reducing food to a list of compounds.

A Bowl Can Hold More Than Broth

It can hold a family recipe, a childhood memory, the comfort of being cared for and the beginnings of a new tradition.

A Knowledge Library, Not Just a Product Range

As Broth & Co has grown, education has become a larger part of our purpose. Nutrition is full of confident claims, unfamiliar terminology and ideas that can be difficult to place in context. We want our articles to help people understand the biology behind food without losing sight of everyday life.

Our growing knowledge library explores bone broth, protein, collagen, the gut microbiome, metabolism, movement, recovery, healthy ageing and the interconnected systems that shape health throughout life. The goal is not to make nutrition feel more complicated. It is to make the complexity understandable.

That same philosophy shapes our recipes. Good information becomes more useful when it leads back to something a person can cook, share or repeat tomorrow.

What Has Changed—and What Has Not

The range is larger than it was when we began. The science continues to develop. New ingredients, new formats and new customer needs keep giving us questions worth exploring.

What has not changed is the standard we return to:

·       Would we use it ourselves?

·       Does it make nourishing food easier to enjoy?

·       Can we explain clearly what it is and why it belongs?

·       Does it respect both traditional food wisdom and modern evidence?

·       Will it be genuinely useful after the excitement of something new has passed?

Those questions help us move forward without losing sight of why Broth & Co began.

Looking Ahead

We will continue to learn, refine and innovate as nutrition science and Australian food culture evolve. We are excited by the growing understanding that health is shaped by connected systems—and by the enduring usefulness of foods that make good eating easier.

Our ambition is not simply to sell more products. It is to build a trusted Australian food and nutrition brand: one that creates genuinely useful foods, explains them honestly and helps people turn good intentions into everyday routines.

Thank You

Whether you have been with us from the beginning or have only just discovered Broth & Co, thank you for making room for us in your kitchen.

Every cup prepared, soup shared and family recipe adapted gives the original idea new life: nourishing food can honour tradition and still fit the way we live now.

There is an old South American saying that good broth can “resurrect the dead”. We will leave resurrection to the proverb. What we do believe is that real food, prepared with care and enjoyed consistently, can make everyday life warmer, easier and better nourished.

That belief started Broth & Co. It still inspires us today.
